Welcome Remark

Dear colleagues,
The worldwide increase of life expectancy, coupled with a decreasing birth rate, has led to populations with increased numbers of more than 60 year-olds. In Asia and the Pacific, the number of older persons is growing rapidly, from 410 million in 2007 to about 733 million in 2025, and to an expected 1.3 billion in 2050. In terms of percentages, older persons will constitute about 15 per cent of the total population in 2025 and up to nearly 25 per cent by 2050, from over 10 per cent now. This demographical change represents an enormous challenge to Indonesia.

Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, and tenth largest elderly population. In 2020, the number of older people will steadily increase to 28.8 million (11% of total population) while the under five population will gradually decrease in number. Therefore, to prepare Indonesia to face population ageing, in which Universitas Indonesia is committed providing support in the process, a collaboration from other universities and institutions is needed.

We would like to thank to Rector of Universitas Indonesia, Director of Directorate Research and Community Services UI, the Universitas Indonesia Web Admin, and the secretariat of Centre for Ageing Studies (CAS)  Universitas Indonesia who have provided valuable inputs for this web.

Hopefully with this website we will be able to establish our collaboration globally and we welcome you to contribute your ideas and sharing information. We also can actively work together in the study of ageing to ensure the future sustainability of our nation and the world’s community.

Warms regards,
Tri Budi W. Rahardjo
