Background
In Asia and the Pacific, the number of older persons is growing rapidly, from 410 million in 2007 to about 733 million in 2025, and to an expected 1.3 billion in 2050. Ageing will also intensify over the next 50 years and the Asian population aged over 60 will increase almost three times from 9% in 2000 to an estimated 24 percent by 2050. Indonesia, as the fourth most populous country, has the tenth largest elderly population. In 2020, the number of older people is estimated to steadily increase to 28.8 million (11% of total population) while the under five population will gradually decrease in number. To further address this issue, Universitas Indonesia (UI) establishes the Center for Ageing Studies (CAS UI) that is located at UI Campus Depok, West Java.
